vslga-signing-10-Sep-2014The new Victorian State-Local Government Agreement has been signed by Premier Denis Napthine, Local Government Minister Tim Bull and Cr Bill McArthur President of the Municipal Association of Victoria representing the sector.

The new VSLGA meets councils’ call for a simpler, more practical charter that will strengthen state–local government relations and better support the ambitious reform agenda under way.

The new agreement commits state and local government to:

  • ensure consistent consultation
  • streamline reporting
  • and simplify funding administration.

Significantly, the agreement introduces a new process to assess the impacts of policy reforms on local government. This will ensure that the impacts on local government of any policy reforms proposed by the state will be considered – impacts including the benefits to the sector of any policy reforms, as well as costs and other impacts on local government resources.
