A  huge 404m Collins Street office skyscraper is proposed for Melbourne's CBD. If approved the development would be among the world's tallest skyscrapers and would be taller than the recently approved Australia 108.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy has paved the way for the Stamoulis Property Group to apply for a permit to develop the site at 555 Collins Street.

Matthew Guy has notified Melbourne City Council that he intends to amend the planning scheme to relax some controls, including overshadowing of the Yarra River.

The Minister has stressed that the  proposal has a long way to go before receiving the go ahead and he is inviting the public to voice their opinions on the proposal.

“I acknowledge that it’s a very significant building. It is office, not residential. There will need to be a long discussion with the City of Melbourne about a permit,” he said.

“With the size of the structure being proposed, Melburnians need to be aware of it and have a say about it, and ultimately we need a lot of feedback before any permit considerations are made.”
