Newcastle Rail Line ClosureThe NSW Planning Minister Pru Goward has confirmed that the government will permit development along the Newcastle inner city rail corridor when the line is cut.

Ms Goward admitted pulling out the heavy rail line was a complicated task, but said work on the new light rail system should be underway by the end of the year.

"The idea of removing the heavy rail is to unite the city with the foreshore, you can't do that if it's all developed, so yes there will be open space," she said.

"There will also be some development.

"I think nobody could disagree with the beauty of the Honeysuckle redevelopment and I think Newcastle would expect there to be some redevelopment along the route."

Ms Goward also confirmed work is due to start on installing Newcastle's new light rail system before the end of 2014.

"There's not a start date, but we expect to have that begun by the end of the year.

"So this is very exciting for Newcastle and any suggestion that we wouldn't proceed with the second stage is farcical.

"For two reasons, one - we've said we'd do it and two, if we didn't do it, we would deservedly, deservedly absolutely chopped to pieces."
