Luxury Townhouse Development On The Yarra Faces Opposition

The owners of 12 Coppin Grove, Hawthorn plan to build three luxury townhouses along the picturesque Yarra River as part of a larger subdivision. The developers are taking the planning application to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal next month after Boroondara Council did not make a decision on the application in 60 days.

The $10 million development proposal has caught the wrath of local NIMBYS, Council and Melbourne Water, who argue that the development could set a precedent for development on the river.

A Council spokeswoman told SMH that the Council would oppose the permit application at the tribunal next month on “nine separate grounds relating to non-compliance with the Boroondara Planning Scheme and overlays”.

“The grounds of refusal include (amongst others) the impact of the development on the environmental amenity of the Yarra River environs, and its impact on the character of the broader St James Park Estate, which comprises a large concentration of individual estate mansions recognized for their historical and architectural merit,” she said.

However, a report in support of the development proposal by Fulcrum Urban Planning said the proposal “The proposal will not have an unreasonable impact upon the amenity or character of the Yarra River environs, or on the amenity of nearby residential properties”.

The luxury townhouse development will include river views, sun deck, plunge pool, three car spaces and a lift to services four levels.
