Mulwala siteCorowa Shire Council has secured a prime piece of foreshore real estate in Mulwala with the help of a community fundraising campaign.

The Mulwala Progress Association led the bid to buy the Melbourne Street block from the New South Wales Government, to extend the public foreshore.

It lobbied the Government to reduce its asking price to $300,000 and the council has now agreed to buy the land, with settlement to go through next month.

The association's Ken McLean says the community will contribute $100,000 to the purchase, with $75,000 already pledged.

"We might do a letter drop like out to the residents all around, rather than face-to-face and ringing ... and we're pretty confident people will jump on board, now it's a done deal and we're going to settle in 30 odd days, and help us out with the last little bit," he said.

"We're going to install some park gym equipment and we've got big plans for a decent sized boardwalk which will go down the extent of both parks in the future and we want to work with the kids, the local kids, the school kids and do something with platypuses ... because there's platypuses in the area."
